Tour Overview
Day 1: From Arachova to the Sacred Site of Delphi – Stop at Thermopylae – Overnight Near Meteora
Your journey begins with a scenic drive along the national highway, heading north through the fertile plains of Boeotia and passing by the legendary city of Thebes, birthplace of King Oedipus.
The first stop is the charming mountain village of Arachova, perched on the slopes of Mount Parnassus. Known for its traditional stone houses, vibrant culture and panoramic views, it’s the perfect place for a short coffee break and stroll through the cobbled streets.
We then continue to Delphi, one of the most mystical and historically rich destinations in Greece. Once considered the “navel of the world”, Delphi was home to the most powerful oracle in antiquity, where pilgrims, city-states and kings came to seek divine guidance.
During your visit to the archaeological site, you’ll discover:
- The Sacred Way
- The Roman Agora
- The Monument of the Argive Kings
- The Polygonal Wall
- The Temple of Apollo, where the oracle delivered her prophecies
- The ancient Theater overlooking the valley
- The Tholos of Athena Pronaia – an architectural gem
- The Palaestra, where athletes trained for the Pythian Games
You will also explore the Delphi Archaeological Museum, which houses an outstanding collection of artifacts dating from the 18th century BC. Highlights include the world-renowned Charioteer of Delphi and objects related to the Oracle and the Pythian Games.
After this cultural immersion, enjoy a traditional Greek lunch in the village of Delphi.
On our way north toward Meteora, we will make a memorable stop at Thermopylae, the historic battlefield where King Leonidas and his 300 Spartans made their legendary last stand. There, you will visit the Leonidas Monument, a tribute to one of ancient Greece’s greatest heroes.
Later in the afternoon, we continue through the mountainous region of Central Greece – bypassing the highway to enjoy an authentic glimpse of the rural landscape.
Overnight stay in either Kalabaka or the quaint village of Kastraki, nestled at the foot of Meteora’s dramatic cliffs. In the evening, take a peaceful walk and enjoy dinner at a local taverna.
Day 2: Discover the Monasteries of Meteora – Return to Athens
The second day is dedicated to exploring Meteora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its awe-inspiring landscape and sky-high monasteries. These sacred structures are perched atop massive sandstone pillars, offering not only spiritual insight but also breathtaking views.
You will visit two of the historic monasteries, such as:
- The Great Meteoron Monastery
- Varlaam Monastery
- St. Stephen’s Monastery
Each visit offers insight into the monastic traditions, spiritual life and the history of the hermits who first settled the cliffs in the 11th century. These monasteries later became important centers of faith and refuge during times of conflict.
After your visit, enjoy lunch in the town of Kalabaka, with traditional Greek flavors and views of the Meteora rocks.
We then begin our comfortable return to Athens, reflecting on the incredible history, nature and culture experienced during this unforgettable two-day tour.
