Tour Overview

Corinth Canal
The Corinth Canal connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea, dreamed of by Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar, the Canal was finally built in 1893, saving 200 nautical miles of often dangerous seas. It cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and separates the Peloponnese from the Greek mainland, effectively making the former peninsula an island. It is 6.4 kilometres (4.0 miles) in length but only 21.4 metres (70 feet) wide at its base, making it impassable for most modern ships and today it is used mainly for tourist traffic.

Crossing into Myth and History
Crossing the Canal, we enter the land of myths and legends. Passing Nemea, where Hercules killed the Nemean Lion, we come to the district of Argolida, named after the city of Argos, home of Jason of the Argonauts.

Mycenae: The Kingdom of Agamemnon
More important in ancient history is the ancient city of Mycenae, home of Agamemnon, the king who led the Greeks in the Trojan Wars. See the magnificent walls and the impressive entrance of the Lions Gate. Outside the walls lies the beehive Tomb of Agamemnon and further back, that of his treacherous wife, Clytemnestra.

Nafplion: First Capital of Modern Greece
Continuing our journey, the drive takes us through the rich vineyards and citrus orchards of Argolis to our next stop, the first capital of modern Greece. Nafplion is a beautiful coastal town built around the harbour and towering over it is the great Palamidis Fortress, built by the Venetians between 1711 and 1714, with its eight turrets, each defendable from the others. The entrance is reached by 999 steps and the view from the top is magnificent.

Just outside the town lies the second fortress of Nafplion, the Bourtzi, built around 1470 as a fort to protect the town from pirates. It later became a prison, known by many today as little Alcatraz. In 1935, it was transformed into a hotel. The town was declared the capital after the War of Independence from the Turks, but after the assassination of the first Greek prime minister, Capodistria, on the steps of the parliament building in 1831, the capital was moved to Athens.

Before continuing our journey to Epidaurus, Nafplio is the perfect stop to enjoy a delightful meal by the sea, surrounded by a breathtaking coastal landscape.

Epidaurus: A Center of Healing and Culture
A short drive away, our final stop before returning to Athens is Epidaurus, a site of healing and one of the greatest theatres ever built. In an idyllic, peaceful setting, Epidaurus was a centre of healing in ancient times, where patients came from far and wide for cures. There is evidence that even complicated brain surgery was carried out here.

Part of the cure here was also relaxation and culture and the massive theatre, built in 330 BC and seating 14,000 people, still has some of the best acoustics in the world. Without a microphone, you can hear a coin drop from the highest levels.
