Tour Overview
A Captivating Journey Through History and Mythology
Discover the heart of ancient Greece with a full-day tour to Delphi, one of the most sacred and historically significant sites of antiquity. This journey will take you through breathtaking landscapes, legendary monuments and timeless myths, offering a truly immersive experience.
Saint Luke Monastery – Sacred Serenity in Distomo
Starting in Distomo, we visit the Monastery of Saint Luke, nestled on a scenic hillside in Helicon, a location once home to a Temple of Demeter Steiritidas, surrounded by olive groves. The landscape remains untouched by modern development and retains its authentic character.
Historical information about the monastery is drawn from the life of Saint Luke, based on a 962 AD anonymous work and other religious sources deemed reliable by archaeologists. According to these records, the founder of the monastic life in this sacred place was Saint Luke himself, who lived there during the last seven years of his life (946–953). He was born in Kastri of Phocis in 896, to parents who were refugees from Aegina.
Arachova – The Jewel of Mount Parnassus
We continue to Arachova, a charming mountain village located at approximately 970 meters elevation on the southern slope of Mount Parnassus, above the valley of the small river Plistos.
Just 8 km east of Delphi and 26 km west of Livadia, Arachova is famous for its flokati rugs, fine furs and vibrant winter atmosphere, making it a favorite destination for nature lovers and winter sports enthusiasts.
Delphi – The Navel of the Earth
Heading to Delphi, believed by the ancients to be the center of the world the “Navel of the Earth.” According to myth, when Zeus released two eagles from opposite ends of the world, they met and landed at Delphi.
Situated on the majestic slopes of Mount Parnassus, where Apollo lived among the Nine Muses, Delphi was a sacred sanctuary dedicated to the sun god Apollo.
The famed Oracle of Delphi, presided over by the high priestess Pythia, attracted visitors from all over the ancient world, each bringing rich offerings. This made Delphi the treasure house of Greece, with treasuries, temples and theaters lining the sacred site.
Delphi was also home to the Pythian Games, held every four years. The well-preserved gymnasium and training areas still stand today. Visitors can explore the Temple of Apollo, the grand theater and the remains of the sacred treasuries, all lasting testaments to Delphi’s past glory.
From the top of the site, at an elevation of 3,000 feet, the view stretches across to the Peloponnese and, on a clear day, even as far as Athens.
Delphi Archaeological Museum
Our exploration continues at the Archaeological Museum of Delphi, where you’ll find some of the site’s most famous artifacts, including:
– The Charioteer of Delphi
– Ancient inscriptions
– Votive offerings
These remarkable objects offer deeper insight into the historical, cultural and spiritual significance of Delphi.
Traditional Greek Dining with a View
To conclude this extraordinary journey, we will stop at a traditional Greek taverna in the village of Delphi. Guests will savor authentic Greek cuisine, prepared with fresh local ingredients, while enjoying stunning amphitheater-like views of the surrounding mountains and valley.
This culinary finale offers the perfect opportunity to reflect on a day filled with history, culture and awe-inspiring natural beauty.
